You may have heard about the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain. The annual event draws thousands of energetic sprinters who do their best to outrun a contingent of bulls in hot pursuit. Dewey Beach, Delaware has its own version called the “Running of the Bull” and it is scheduled this year for Saturday, June 29. Well, actually “the bull” constitutes two humans dressed in a bull outfit.
The merriment starts around noon in the parking lot of the Starboard Restaurant and Bar, sponsor of the event that is billed as a fundraiser for the local police department. The actual “Run” is at 2 pm following a fly-over by vintage airplanes that streak past the restaurant and fly down the beach.
It is quite a scene featuring live music, flowing libations, an Elvis impersonator, matadors and lots of slightly tipsy revelers dresses in the traditional Pamplona white and red. In waves, the crowd makes it way across Coastal Highway, down the beach for four or five blocks, accompanied by “the Bull” and then resumes the festivities back at the Starboard. It’s all for a good cause.
This year’s event will take place on Saturday, June 29. More details can be found on the Visit Delaware website.
